Volunteer Drivers Group
Despite the availability of minibus and dial-a-ride services in some areas, there is no substitute for a friendly volunteer using their own car to collect and return home the frail and elderly with mobility problems.
Most of the volunteer drivers groups in North Somerset belong to RSVP, and work together to resolve common issues such as hospital parking facilities.
(Please note that in other areas, transport services are provided by the RSVP surgery-based patient volunteer teams)
The drivers groups cover the main towns in North Somerset as well as many rural areas where bus services are poor or non-existent. The following are examples of some of the groups and the various essential services they provide:
Transport for residents to get to medical appointments in hospitals and local doctors’ surgeries.
Transport for the frail and elderly to get to hospital, clinic, surgery and other appointments locally and in Weston-super-Mare and Bristol.
Car drivers to get local residents to medical appointments at doctors surgeries, dentists and opticians, for hospital appointments in Weston-super-Mare, Bristol and Bath, and for visiting relatives in hospital or long term care. The scheme also lends aids to the community, such as wheel chairs, walking aids, children’s cots, high chairs etc.
Volunteer drivers transport people to medical appointments, including hospitals, local surgeries, dentists and opticians. The group has been established since 1985 and the office, open five days a week, is also staffed entirely by volunteers.
A group of volunteers give their time to take elderly residents or residents unable to use public transport to hospital, surgeries, shopping or visiting residents in nursing or residential homes.
Car transport to doctors, hospitals, dentists and other health providers for local residents.
Transport for elderly and housebound people referred by local surgeries and social services, for medical and social needs
Car transport for patients requiring treatment at three local surgeries
A scheme to provide personal transport for local residents who would otherwise have difficulty in travelling to medical appointments at their surgeries or the local hospitals.
A hospital car-drivers scheme, which provides patients and their carers with transport between Weston-super-Mare and the various Bristol Hospitals
