Do you love to sing?
Would you like to bring enjoyment and vitality to older people living in care homes?
Volunteers run musical activity sessions for older people living in care homes, extra care sites and community centres in Bristol many of whom are the most vulnerable people living in our society. Our aim is to encourage the people in these settings to sing, to feel special and have fun. For some, it is the highlight of their week.
The volunteers receive training and ongoing regular support meetings.
The weekly activity sessions are free and run for up to an hour. A typical session can include singing, playing instruments, listening to stirring classical music, rock & roll and poetry or bashing a balloon.
Music is an amazing way to connect with older people, especially those living with dementia. A song can spark a memory and residents who rarely speak can suddenly start singing a song.
To quote a volunteer
“ It is so special and this is why I do this.”
The volunteers are passionate about improving the quality of life for the residents and to bring some joy and fun into their lives.
One volunteer said,
“ It’s the best volunteering job I have had, I enjoy it as much as my group enjoy it.”
