Surgery-Based Patient Volunteer Support Groups
GP Surgeries are ideally placed to identify the people, registered as their patients, who have very little support or connections within their community. Many of these elderly, disabled, frail and housebound people with multiple health problems have frequent appointments but getting to see their GP or Nurse can often be a major problem. That is why we are hoping to set up a Patient Volunteer Support Group in every Surgery.
The Volunteer Groups consist of ‘Driver Volunteers’ who are drive elderly patients to and from the surgery (reducing cancelled appointments and home visits) and ‘Wellbeing Volunteers’ who enjoy befriending isolated and lonely patients. This could mean providing personal services (sharing a cup of tea, going to the library, small DIY, gardening, etc) and/or enabling isolated, lonely people to find new activities and interests in their local community.
The RSVP Organiser is the essential pre-requisite for a successful scheme in the area covered.
This is a highly rewarding role for anyone who enjoys meeting people, making connections and is a ‘natural’ organiser. If you are over 50 years old and have the enthusiasm and skills for this task we would love to hear from you. As a Surgery Coordinator for your own or a local Surgery, you would be helping it to become more efficient, and be playing an active and valuable role in your local community.
All RSVP members have excellent third party and personal accident insurance cover and all out-of-pocket expenses are reimbursed.
