A Celebration of Reading in Bristol’s Primary Schools, Intellect (2016)

Published on March 22, 2017 under Reading

RSVP has many volunteers in Bristol Primary schools helping pupils enjoy books and listening to them read. We thought our members would be interested in hearing about an initiative by ABLAZE which resulted in some amazingly imaginative poems.

“Ablaze ran a Bristol Primary School Poetry Competition last March asking pupils to compose a poem about reading. The publication of the final book“A Celebration of Reading in Bristol’s Primary Schools, Intellect Books (2016), was kindly sponsored by Intellect Books and the winners of each age category were announced at Ablaze’s Annual Celebration Event at The M Shed.

The entries to the competition were so impressive, that it was difficult to choose the winning poems to be included in the book. However, after several rounds of judging were completed, 71 successful poems were picked out.

Well done to everyone who entered the competition and make sure to enter another poem next year!”

As the entries were so impressive we, at RSVP, will be publishing a selection of poems from each year group every month, and the March publications are:

 Reception age group entry:

Ladybirds by Jake Gray – Reception, Summerhill Infant School – the winning entry for the under 7 age group and runner-up across all age groups.

Year 1 age group entry:

A poem by Ella Lintern – Year 1, St Patricks Catholic Primary School

Please follow the links above to download and read the entries

Also, Ablaze are running a second competition where the theme will be ‘Friendship’ – and the poems already received are absolutely lovely! The competition was extended to South Glos schools, too, this year.
